As many of you may have already heard, Healthy Ride is celebrating a very happy holiday season this year having received $200,000 to expand the bike share system in 2017. We have a lot to be thankful for! This past summer, we invited people all over the city to participate in planning our expansion by asking, “Where do you want to see bike share?”. People contributed to our online interactive map, siting 500+ station locations, made nearly 200 comments, and attributed 4,877 “likes”.
We also attended dozens of public meetings around the city hearing feedback from riders and would-be riders on where they want to #TakeHealthyRide, but can’t yet. All of this information will help inform where additional stations will be placed.
Now we get to turn all of that information that into action. While this next round of stations will only make a small dent in connecting the entire city to active transportation, it will undoubtedly create better connections in the existing system footprint and begin connecting more neighborhoods. Our focus will be on filling-in areas within the current footprint that will build a more convenient, reliable network. We will also be working to expand intelligently outside of the current system, connecting our current stations to new, nearby neighborhoods.
So what’s next? LOTS and LOTS of planning. Over the coming months we will be working closely with the City of Pittsburgh and community organizations to solidify the future station locations. And don’t worry, we’ll keep you in the loop on announcements, meetings, and details via the Blog, our Facebook page, and Twitter.
