Meet the Staff: Murphy

Meet the staff of Healthy Ride! We’d like to show you the faces of the team that keeps Pittsburgh’s bike share rolling.

1. What is your role at Healthy Ride? When did you start working with Healthy Ride?

I am a mechanic and I started in November of 2019.

2. When did you learn how to ride a bike? Who taught you?

I don’t have a very good grasp on the age, but I’ll guess I learned to ride sometime between ages 4-6.  My dad was responsible for teaching me to ride and I remember the “Oh! He’s not holding the seat anymore!” moment pretty vividly. Shortly thereafter I found myself pushing this little lime green & black splatter KMart kicker to the top of a grass hill next to the school parking lot with to plans of slowing down.

3. What kind of riding do you like to do?

BMX is my first love and I’ve been doing that for as long as I can remember. I commute via Fairdale on most days and enjoy a good road & gravel ride. I recently built my first mountain bike and I’m having fun with that as well.

4. What’s your favorite trip to make by Healthy Ride?

My favorite Healthy Ride trip has to be to Salem’s Market & Grill for lunch. Bonus* They’re open for takeout during this COVID19 situation.

5. What does a typical day at Healthy Ride look like for you?

Right now the day starts with sanitizing my tools and shared surfaces in the shop. The rest of the day is spent wrenching on bikes and washing my hands.

6. Most memorable / fun / interesting thing you did or saw while on a Healthy Ride?

I just enjoy cruising alleyways and taking in the street art while test riding our bikes after a repair.  I also pay regular visits to the Clemente Museum parking lot during test rides.

In response to COVID-19

How are you staying active during your self-quarantine?

I’m doing a lot of solo road riding as well as working on the dirt jump / trail spot with a few (well spaced) friends to get ready for summer.
