Ambassador Ride: BOOM Concepts’ Garfield Art Tour

This year, our Ambassadors are using Ride Spot to create unique routes that can be used by daily commuters, first-time riders, and anyone in between. Learn more and start riding with us virtually!

This past weekend the team at BOOM Concepts hosted their first ride. The ride highlighted not only the public art scene but the culture of the underground graffiti art scene as well. It was a classic Pittsburgh day. Overcast but the rain held off as riders got a bit of history behind some of Garfield’s public art. The photo above was taken in front of one of Garfield’s oldest and most know murals “The Bride on Penn Ave”. Located on the corner of Penn and Graham. This mural was created in 1996 by the late Judy Penzer, who unfortunately died after in a car crash. It was later restored in 2011 by local artist Ashley Hodder.

Throughout the summer Public art and graffiti art has been meshing to spread a message of unity throughout the entire globe. We had a great time highlighting both ends of the spectrum in Garfield and where they come together to spread a larger message. This piece was created in June by local mural and street artists amidst the Current Civil rights movement. You can find this piece on the corner Penn and Eveline.

Riders got to learn about the local underground art scene as well. Riders got a chance to learn that graffiti extends beyond hand styles to full-blown images for “throw-ups.”

The ride utilized the new neighborways and alleyways that connect the Garfield and Friendship area. We took the time to talk about the two pieces that hang above Penn ave between Aiken and Graham. The image in the far left titled DAVU AYOMI by local artist and Puppeteer Tarish Pipkins. The other image not captured is the piece titled Stay Woke Rooster by Baron Batch.
