“Watch Out, Curves Ahead” was a body positive ride in collaboration with Shateesha Murphy, owner of Voluptuous Lady Boutique. According to Shateesha, “Voluptuous Lady Boutique caters to the Plus-Sized aka Queen-Sized Woman. Created from my love of fashion and beauty and wanting to bring awareness that beauty has no standards. We all are beautiful no matter size you are and that being true to herself is the best thing a woman could ever do for herself”.
The goal of this ride was to inform individuals that anyone and everyone can ride a bike no matter the shape or size of the person. Here is how the ride went down!
The ride took place in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. East Liberty is a neighborhood that houses the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, one of my favorite places in the community. The Kelly Stayhorn Theater is named after two Pittsburgh natives well-known in the entertainment business, Gene Kelly and Bill Strayhorn. The theater was developed to celebrate the arts, diversity, and inclusion, all while carrying the legacy of Kelly and Strayhorn. It was nice to visit the theater while in the neighborhood!
We began at the Penn Avenue Healthy Ride Station right next to the East Liberty Presbyterian Church and right across from the Kelly Strayhorn Theater. From the station we took a ride on Baum Blvd, Centre Avenue, and made our way to Stevenson Place before returning back to Penn Avenue. While on Centre Avenue, the group stopped at Whole Foods for healthy snacks.
After healthy snacks, we made our way to Fit-Ish Nutrition, a woman-owned, black-owned smoothie and juice bar located on Stevenson Place in East Liberty that serves some of the best smoothies enjoyed by both adults and children. Unfortunately, Fit-Ish Nutrition was closed so we made our way to another smoothie and juice bar, Clean Juice, for some healthy juices. Clean Juice is located on Penn Avenue in East Liberty and serves a variety of different juices and healthy eats.
Although, some other riders could not make the bike ride, we agreed that we will have a “Watch Out, Curves Ahead” part two in another neighborhood, so be on the look-out!
